JUne 27 Coconut and Keys'
Native Food Festival Posted 5/29/2009 by BCCLT Staff.

On June 25-28, 2009, the Monroe Chapter of The Florida Voter Leagues will host the Florida Voters League’s 51st Annual State Convention right here in Key West! We will welcome the 67 member chapters to Monroe County by kicking off with the Bahama Conch Community Land Trust the 1st Annual “Coconut and Native Food” Festival in Key, West Florida. The theme for the event is: “Going Green: Recycling Jobs for the Future”. The festival is free to the public.

The festival program will be hosted by BET comedian Larry Dogg of Miami, FL, along with our special guest South Florida’s premiere comedienne “Lady T”. During the day, local performers will perform on stage. Our star performer of the night will be nationally known singer/entertainer Betty Wright, who’s “The Clean Up Woman” became a #1 hit throughout the country.

We are promoting this as a Florida Keys event, as our Monroe County membership spans the entire Florida Keys. We are asking that vendors focus on “everything that can be made from coconuts”; jewelry, handbags, baskets, art, clothing, rugs, and hats! We are reaching out to Florida Keys non-profit organizations, businesses, Keys seafood suppliers, High School groups, and “local” original/native food vendors who would like to participate. We will have a contest to choose the “best coconut drink, pie, candy, tarts, shrimps, and rice”! We encourage the vendors to use “recyclable products for food” when possible. There will also be a prize for the best “themed coconut booth”.
The festival will open at 11:00 a.m. and end at 10:00 pm. This is a family friendly event with games and Bounce houses for children.

OCT 28 BCCLT’s 13th Annual Meeting and Open House.Posted 10/28/2008 by BCCLT Staff.

The Board of Directors and Staff of BCCLT invites you to celebrate our 13th year of service in Bahama Village and Key West!  Our theme this year is “Moving Forward in a New Direction”, with a focus on Youth leadership and Economic development opportunities for our neighborhood.

The annual meeting will begin with a screening of “The Journey”, an educational documentary focusing on the site of the Henrietta Marie, located 17 miles off the shores of Key West in the Atlantic Ocean where it sank in the 1800’s. It also highlights the young African American divers that journeyed there as part of their training to become Master Divers and to experience the “impact of slavery on their lives.  This will be a fundraiser that will provide scholarships for local youths who want to become a part of the Tennessee Aquatic Project, which produced this film and also provides leadership and life skills training for youth 11 to 18 years of age in addition to aquatic skills.  Donations are $10 for youth and $25 for adults.

After the screening, there will be a reception and buffet at the Crowne Plaza Top of the LaConcha Hotel, 430 Duval Street, which will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m.  Donation will be $35.  There will be a brief meeting to elect new BCCLT Board Members and to introduce the new BCCLT Advisory Committee.  Please RSVP by October 23, 2008 to Noel Puig at (305) 294-0884 or e-mail info@bahamaconchclt.org.

Come to our Annual Meeting and Halloween Open House to get first-hand information about our work in Bahama Village, meet the staff, and the Board of Directors who volunteer their time to improve the quality of life for Key West residents.

We need your support! We promise to uphold your confidence in us to continue to serve with integrity and openness, and to responsibly represent Bahama Village and the citizens of Key West.

Look forward to seeing you on October 29th and October 31, 2008!  Thank you for your continued support.
